Her Own Woman's Tubal Ligation Notes

Tubal ligation pre-op tips

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing to the hospital that's easy to get into after the procedure.
  • Have someone drive you to and from the hospital.
  • Bring along some crackers or "fizzy drink" to combat nausea on the way home from the hospital.
  • Make sure your bed is comfy before you leave, so you can climb right in when you get home.
  • Inform the doctors and nurses if you're afraid of needles.
  • Ask for a topical anasthetic when the IV is placed in your arm to minimize the pain.
  • Don't eat 8 to 12 hours before the operation
  • Refrain from sexual activity for at least two days before the operation.

Post-op Tubal Ligation Care

  • Follow the doctor's instructions for caring for your incisions.
  • Take it easy for at least two days.

Post-Tubal: A Sterile Kind of Life

Menstrual changes

Don't forget--you'll still have periods after your tubal!

If you no longer rely on hormonal birth control after your tubal, your periods will change. If you used to have an IUD, your periods will change. If you also had a uterine ablation with the tubal, your periods definitely will change, and may very well cease altogether.

Sex

Anecdotal evidence suggests childfree women enjoy sex more post-tubal, due to the absence of birth control failure worry. (Remember, if you've opted for the Essure method, you must use birth control until your tubes are declared blocked by your doctor.)

If you do not practice monogamy, please remember that the only STD sterilization protects you from is pregnancy! Use condoms and get tested at least once a year for STD's.

A Few Words about "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome"

There are a lot of women running around on the Internet complaining about "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome." Most of these women have given birth, and most were not fully aware of what a tubal ligation entailed when they agreed to undergo the procedure. Take all talk of "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome" with the proverbial grain of salt.
