The Spring Ant Wars of 2007

Posted by on 26 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: nature

Spring is here again, and with it comes lots of insects.
We’ve been fighting the Spring Ant Wars since 2004. Every year, we seal up cracks in the floor where they come in. This cuts down on the invasions, but it also forces the ants to find other places to invade. This year, they’re getting very creative. They’re entering the upstairs bathroom through the toilet and a crack near the tub. (We pulled out the carpet and put in vinyl tile, so there’s gaps that never existed.)

Thankfully, we have a few new, non-lethal weapons. Wintergreen oil seems to keep them away, as does clove oil. Unfortunately, the latter is VERY expensive! Fortunately, powdered cloves work just as well. I’ve taken to buying a package when I go to the market, and sprinking it along the laundry room’s back door that leads to the area where I hang my laundry. Works fairly well, though the ants are finding other places to invade the laundry room & kitchen.

Fun With Leftovers

What I threw together for lunch yesterday–

I took the last bit of fajita stuff from Saturday’s lunch, and some grilled chicken from Monday night’s dinner, and stir fried them in a little olive oil in my tiny electric skillet. Once it was done, I served it on top of leftover “saffron-esque” rice (aka a pre-spiced rice packet from Mahatma).

Too windy!

It’s been very windy lately, so I haven’t been able to use my clothesline. 🙁
The clothes will stay on the line if I pin ’em down good, but I can’t use hangers, or my clothes will end up on the ground. 🙁

Here’s an apron I made yesterday. I think this is my best one yet!
I love how I made 3 front pockets–it took me quite awhile to decide how to configure them.

My Newest Apron
newest apron, back
I’m proud of myself for being able to use almost all of the pink fabric! This is also the first apron I’ve made with a matching headband. 😉

I used a lot of fancy stitching for the pockets. Yeah, I know, it’s hard to tell from the pictures. My digital camera’s so old, it doesn’t have a zoom! 😉

Housewife Couture

Two things I’ve started making for myself to make housework easier:

1. Aprons with a front pocket for my iPod. Some half, some full, some double-sided, all funky.

2. Crocheted head scarfs. So far I’ve made 3, and I’m looking through my yarn to see about making another one. I plan on wearing them outside of the house, so I’m picky about the colors I’m gonna use.

I’m going to try to take pics of these things–I’ll pick the best apron & scarf.
